Athletes of all ages and skill levels should consider a mouth guard to protect their teeth from injury, and to prevent their teeth from grinding during activity. And it’s not just sports where mouth guards can help; mouth guards can also help prevent snoring and alleviate jaw pain.

Different Kinds of Mouth Guards

Basically, there are three kinds of mouth guards: stock, boil & bite, and custom- fitted.

Stock mouth guards are the kinds that you find in sporting goods stores. They’re “ready to use” and offer minimal (if any) adjustment. While these mouth guards may seem like a convenient and inexpensive solution, we along with most other dentists advise against their use. They fit poorly (even if they “seem” snug), they’re bulky, and worst of all, the can make wearers feel “protected” when they really aren’t!

Boil and bite mouth guards are made of thermoplastic material, and are available in many sporting good stores. The mouth guard is placed in hot water to make it soft and flexible, and then positioned in the mouth in order to create a more customized fit. Again, like stock mouth guards, we don’t recommend these as it doesn’t give a truly precise, customized fit – which means that there is added, unnecessary risk of dental injury.

Custom-fitted mouth guards are designed by dentists like us, and are designed to perfectly fit your mouth and teeth. We begin by taking an impression of your mouth, and then mould over the model with a special, comfortable material. The end result is a perfectly-fitting, extremely comfortable mouth guard that will help you reduce injury and avoid teeth grinding as you enjoy any activity.
